Co-operative Wholesale Society

We are working with the Co-operative College to develop a series of short animations about the formation of the Co-operative Wholesale Society (CWS). We will be looking at five key figures for this Heritage Lottery funded project, and bringing their stories to life using heritage resources from the Co-operative archives.
Many of the people we are animating were from the Rochdale area, and so we it was important that we use just the right voices to represent them. The Rochdale Pioneers Museum kindly hosted our voice recording session, finding us a great space on their mezzanine floor to capture sound.
Staff and volunteers from the museum recorded voices for us, as well as a fantastic group of local actors who had volunteered to be involved.
We had a great morning recording the scripts, and even had time to record the script for a future animation about the formation of the Co-operative party in 1917 too.
We've already begun to develop the visual side of the animations, using photographs of each person being animated. Here are a couple of concept art sketches of Abraham Greenwood and Ben Jones, as well as a finished image of Abraham Greenwood who is the first of the 5 we are animating.
Our thanks go to Jenny, Johnny, James, Greg, Neil, Peter and Kevin for volunteering their time and their voices for the project, and to Julie for facilitating the recording session.
