Moominland

By Huckleberry Films, Aug 15 2013 12:50PM

I've just returned from a volunteering day at the Horse and Bamboo theatre in Bacup. As well as having the opportunity to learn about puppet making from the amazingly talented Alison, it was a chance to network with other creative people, and discover more about the Moomins!

Four volunteers were there for most of the day, with Gretchen from Montana also joining us in the afternoon. Gretchen is a puppet maker who is just starting a placement at the Horse and Bamboo, and will be making puppets with Alison for the next few weeks.

We were helping to make puppets for the Moominland winter show, which will be shown in Bath in December. The puppets are being made in 3 different sizes, and so there are a lot for Alison to make! Between us, we cut out templates, smoothed wooden hands, papier mached Moomin heads and bodies, and added clay to a model of Moominmamma that Alison had already started to shape.

It was a fantastic and inspiring day, and we're coincidentally going to be in Bath when the Moominland performances are taking place in December - so we can go and see the puppets in action!
